Xi'an accelerates technological innovation

In 2024, Xi'an invested 66.79 billion yuan ($9.17 billion) into research and development (R&D), with an R&D intensity of 5.56 percent, ranking third nationwide. The city's global innovation index ranking rose to 18th, highlighting its rapid progress in technological advancement.

Over the past year, Xi'an has supported the growth of high-tech enterprises, with more than 300 companies upgraded to enterprises above a designated size — those with an annual output value of 20 million yuan or more.

The number of high-tech enterprises exceeded 15,000, while the number of technology-based small and medium-sized enterprises surpassed 19,000.

Xi'an has made significant strides in building major scientific innovation platforms, launching the Xi'an section of the Advanced Attosecond Laser Facility, and completing the main structure of the High-Precision Ground-Based Timing System. The Hanjiang National Laboratory Xi'an Research Center was also inaugurated, and eight new or restructured national key laboratories were established.

In 2024, Xi'an initiated 110 industrial technology projects, focusing on strategic industries such as semiconductors, biomedicine, artificial intelligence, new energy, and new materials.

The city made significant progress in commercializing scientific and technological achievements, with technology contract transactions reaching 50 billion yuan, a 15.3 percent year-on-year increase. To bridge the gap between research and commercialization, Xi'an introduced 1,175 new technology managers, enhancing the efficiency of technology transfer.

Innovation drives Xi'an's growth, and the city continues integrating scientific research with industrial applications. In the new year, Xi'an aims to accelerate the development of advanced productive forces, solidifying its role as a global innovation hub.
