This is Xi'an

The Lantian Man was discovered in 1963 in Lantian county, Xi'an city, Shaanxi province and dates back to approximately 1 million years ago.

A 6,000-year-old Neolithic village, Banpo, was discovered in 1953 in Xi’an, which contains the remains of several well organized Neolithic settlements. Over 40 houses, 200 cellars, 80 cooking pits, 400 pillar caves, six pottery kilns and 170 tombs were excavated, vividly reflecting the prosperity of that period of time

In the year of 1046 BC in the Western Zhou dynasty, Xi'an was called Fenggao, which was the combination of two cities, Fengjing and Gaojing, established by Emperor Wen and Emperor Wu of Zhou respectively. In the history of China, the two cities were the first national capitals to rule the entire state.

During the Warring States period, the state of Qin moved its capital to Yueyang city (now Yanliang district of Xi’an) in 383 BC, and later to Xianyang (350 BC), just northwest of modern Xi'an. Following the Warring States period, China was unified under the Qin dynasty (221-206 BC) for the first time, with the capital located at Xianyang. The first emperor of China, Qin Shi Huang ordered the construction of the Terracotta Army and his mausoleum just to the east of Xi'an.

In the early Western Han Dynasty (206 BC), Liu Bang established his capital in Xi'an and named it Chang'an, meaning “eternal ruling and permanent peace”. Changle Palace, Liu Bang’s first palace, was built in 202 BC and in 200 BC Weiyang Palace started its construction. Construction of the first city wall of Chang'an began in 194 BC.

Emperor Wen of Sui dynasty ordered the construction of a new capital, southeast of the Han capital, called Daxing (literally means great excitement). It was one of the most prosperous international metropolises at that time.

Chang’an was still the capital during the Tang dynasty. It was reconstructed upon the premise of Daxing--the former imperial quarter of the Sui--and grew to be one of the largest and most populous cities in the world at that time.

After the Tang Dynasty, Chang'an was renamed Jingzhou prefecture during the Later Tang dynasty, Shaanxi province during the Song dynasty, Anxi province during the Yuan dynasty, and Fengyuan province later in the Yuan dynasty. It functioned as the political, economic and cultural center of northwestern China.

In the spring of 1369, the second year after the Ming dynasty was established a general under Emperor Zhu Yuanzhang called Xu Da occupied Fengyuan province and renamed it Xi'an, meaning “to pacify northwest”. Ever since, the name Xi'an has not changed.

On May 2, 1949, Xi'an was liberated. After the establishment of the People's Republic of China, Xi'an became the residence of the Northwest Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China and the Northwest Administrative Committee as well as the municipality directly under the control of the Central People's Government. In 1954, Xi’an became a provincial city.
