Recently, the Graded Music Test (GMT) is officially introduced to Xi’an. It means that the students of Shaanxi who learn how to play the piano can take exams without stepping out of Shaanxi and can obtain a piano grading certificate issued by prestigious universities of the United States.

Organized by Minnesota Conservatory for the Arts of Saint Mary’s University, Graded Music Test is a non-profit music level test for international adolescents. GMT is designed to comprehensively examine students’ music quality and level by testing their performance, music theory, listening and basic skills, and the students who pass the Grade 11th test can reach the average level of entrance exams for art majors of the universitiesy of North America. A few days ago, Professor Nede, a famous pianist and GMT test director, made a special trip to Xi’an to award Shaanxi Examination Center. During the awarding ceremony, he said that all examiners of GMT are in-service professors of Saint Mary’s University and they are dispatched to guide the test of all parts of the world, to ensure uniformity of the entire examination evaluation criteria. The candidates passing the Grade 11th test with excellent performance can apply for a GMT scholarship of U.S. 5,000 to 7,000 dollars per year. Nede told the reporter that compared with piano grading test of China, GMT does not particularly value the excellence of skills, instead, it pays more attention to students’ understanding of music and music scores. This is to ensure natural flow of the rhythm of music in their heart by means of playing the piano, which is the true essence of pursuing music and loving music.

Tao Minxia, Chairman of Shaanxi Piano Association and Professor from Piano Department of Xi’an Conservatory of Music, told the reporter that now the overseas music level test is gradually introduced to Xi’an and it is certainly helpful to Chinese students who intend to go abroad in the future. It also shows that art students of Xi’an become more and more outstanding and thus attract the attention of American examiners.
