The International Universities Rowing Regatta Opens at the Kunming Lake Qixi Park

Wang Yongkang, a member of the Standing Committee of Shaanxi Province and Secretary of Xi’an municipal Party Committee, blows the whistle to begin the Kunming Lake Qixi Park International Universities Rowing Regatta.

The Kunming Lake Qixi Park International Universities Rowing Regatta officially kicked off in the morning of October 2. Wang Yongkang, a member of the Standing Committee of Shaanxi Province and secretary of Xi’an Committee of CPC, Yue Huafeng, chairman of Xi’an Municipal CPPCC and secretary of the Party Working Committee of Xixian New Area, Han Song, a member of the Standing Committee of Xi’an, deputy secretary of Xi’an Committee of CPC  and secretary of Politics and Law Committee, Kang Jun, director of the Administrative Committee, and other leaders from the related departments of Xixian New Area attended the opening ceremony, which was addressed by Liu Zheng, secretary of the Party Committee of the Fengdong New City. Wang Yongkang kicked off the regatta by a whistle.

This international regatta of international famous universities got full support from China Water Sports Administration Center, Chinese Rowling Association, Sports Bureau of Shaanxi Province and Sports Bureau of Xi’an, with participants coming from 8 universities, which are Oxford University, Harvard University, Princeton University, University of Amsterdam, University of Otago, Xi’an Jiao Tong University, the Fourth Military Medical University and Xidian University.

A whistle from Wang Yongkang signaled the beginning of the regatta at 10 a.m., after which in the morning were the men’s K-8 1000m and men’s K-4 commentated by Jiang Zhifang, a former champion of the regatta in an Olympic Games.

The rowing team from the University of Amsterdam, after a rat race, won the champion over all the 7 teams, which were divided in two groups, and was followed by Princeton University in the second place and University of Otago the third. Four teams competed in In K-4 regatta, and Harvard University, the Fourth Military Medical University, Xi’an Jiao Tong University and Xidian University won the first, second, third and fourth place respectively.

The continental cup was held in the afternoon, where 8 rowing teams were divided into Asian team, European team, American team and Oceania Team.

“The introduction of International Universities Rowing Regatta to Kunming Lake is aimed at popularizing rowing in Xi’an, which allows more citizens of Xi’an and foreign friends to learn the history and culture of Kunming Lake.” said Zou Suiliang, director of the Bureau of Family planning, Healthcare, Culture and Sports of Fengdong New City in Xixian New Area, during the interview with the reporter of Shaanxi News Mobile App. He added that such regatta will continue in order to promote the sports games in Kunming Lake.

The regatta took place at the test waters of Doumen Reservoir in Fengdong New City of southwestern Xi’an’s Xixian New Area. After constructing for over 2 years, the test waters of Doumen Reservoir was opened free to citizens on September 28. The name, Kunming Lake Qixi Park, comes from its location at the former site of Kunming Lake in the Han Dynasty and the local fairytale of the Cowherd and the Weaving Maid. According to the park’s statistics, about 230,000 citizens have visited the Kunming Lake Qixi Park by noon of October 2.

The aims of this regatta, as the first International Universities Rowing Regatta held in Kunming Lake, are to introduce high-level regatta to Xi’an, where its citizens could closely enjoy the wonderful international rowing regatta, and to popularize the rowing sports in Xi’an. The regatta also serves as a new platform, where universities in Xi’an have exchanged culture and sports with internationally famous universities. It is reported that there would be more high-level water sports in the waters of Kunming Lake to promote the development of the national fitness program and the popularization of water sports.
