The play is set in the Yue Port in Zhangzhou in Ming Dynasty and the Maritime Silk Road. It tells the love story of Spanish girl Celia and He Chunlin, a physician born in Zhangzhou. She fell in love with him after he cured her of weird a disease in a sea travel to Spain. She traveled to Yue Port for him but was unfortunately taken back to Spain. He embarked on a search for her. They finally became lovers despite all the hardships.
The opera blends in Jin song, Spanish waltz and other elements based on traditional Shaoxing opera and fully shows the charm of Shaoxing opera and the elements of the Maritime Silk Road. Huang Guoqing, chief director of the opera and head of Fujian Fang Hua Shaoxing Opera Troupes, said that the theme was to emphasize that Fujian was the core area of the Maritime Silk Road. He hoped that the audience could understand the spirit of “peace, communication, understanding, tolerance, and win-win cooperation” of the Maritime Silk Road through the opera.
