Pau City of France

Located near the border between France and Spain, Pau City covers an area of 3,155 hectares with a population of nearly 80,000, and serves as the capital city of Pyrenees-Atlantic Province. With a pleasant climate in the four seasons of the year, Pau City is famous as a tourist destination for spa and vacation purposes. With its vast green areas, it was once rated as one of the 4 national garden cities by the French Government.  

Although a small city, Pau City once occupied an important position in French history and served as the birthplaces of 3 European dynasties, including French King Henry IV, Sweden King Bernadotte and a Danish King, hence the name “city of kings”.  

Pau City is not only has a long history, it is also rather developed in science and technology, education and modern industries. With its rapid development in industry, food, wood processing, shoes and hats, many products have won international fame. The city is taking a leading role in aviation engine manufacturing, precision instruments, industrial ceramics as well as in the exploration and utilization of gas fields. With the European corn exploration and research center in the city, Pau is taking the lead in corn breeding and improvement in the world. Viticulture and winemaking are also very advanced, and Pau is one of the important wine producers in France.

Tourism is the major pillar industry in Pau City, 60% of all employees in the urban area work in this profession, and tourism revenue is one of the main economic sources of the city. The top of Pyrenees Mountain is covered with snow all the year round, on its north slop there are very good ski fields and is the ideal choice for skiing in winter in the South of France.

Pau City is also a famous cultural city, and the institutes of higher learning in the neighboring areas are generally the University of Pau and Pays de l'Adour, with 13,000 on-campus students. Every year numerous activities are held in the university such as the Bernard Carnival, Spain Flamingo Art Week and Grand Prix, etc.

The agency with highest power is the city parliament of Pau, and Mayor of the city is elected by the mps, who have a double identity, representing both the municipal government and working as the local officials of the country.

On September 15, 1986 Pau City established sister-city relationship with Xi’an.
