With the Dragon Boat Festival approaching, the family of Cheng Lang, a folk artist in Xi’an, works overtime to steam beautiful flower buns for eager customers.
The flower buns are shaped as snakes, scorpions, centipedes, toads, and poisonous spiders. Cheng colors the flower buns when they are just out of the pot. After Cheng's skillful hand decoration, the beautiful flower buns are ready and waiting.
Cheng is so skillful that dough immediately becomes a variety of cute small animals in his hands.
Cheng said that there is a custom in Xi’an that before the Dragon Boat Festival grandmothers send granddaughters steamed flower buns, which implies the good wishes of repelling insects and driving snakes to guarantee children's happy and healthy growth.
Cheng said that it takes time to make such steamed buns as they are hand made. Customers begin ordering half a month before the festival because the steamed buns require kneading, steaming, coloring, dotting with black beans, flower arranging and other processes.
