The Xi'an Institute for the Protection of Cultural Heritage revealed on Jan 9 that since 2021, the institute has excavated one burial site at the Beicheng village cemetery in Airport New City of Xixian New Area, where 285 tombs were discovered.
This is the largest independent cemetery from the Sixteen Kingdoms period (304-439) to have been discovered so far.
It is of extremely important significance for the development history of the ancient Chinese mausoleum system.
The tombs in the Beicheng village cemetery are well planned and neatly arranged, and the tomb passages are all facing east.
This discovery has provided important information for the study of the hierarchy and burial system of the tombs from the Sixteen Kingdoms period.
