Mauritian musician Stanley Perne wears many hats – drummer, music teacher, composer and producer. "Just like my music, I embrace fusion, blending rock, pop, and electronic music elements into jazz," says Perne.
Since arriving in Xi'an, he has fallen in love with the beauty of Chinese music. "Everything can be fused," he remarks. "I want to add Chinese colors to my jazz notes, helping Chinese audiences appreciate jazz while introducing Chinese musical elements to the world."

Fifteen years have passed since Perne first arrived in Xi'an. "In 2010, a Chinese friend invited me to perform in Beijing," Perne says. "That experience opened a new world for me, and I instantly fell in love with China. I've been to many cities, but Xi'an is my favorite. I love its authenticity and vibrancy – it makes me feel at home."
By night, Perne performs in clubs across Xi'an, using jazz to ease the stress of urban professionals. His performances blend diverse influences, offering audiences a fresh perspective on jazz's versatility.
Perne also brings jazz to rural communities. "We performed a fusion jazz quartet at the 2022 Guanzhong Mangba Art Festival. Many villagers had never seen such a performance before. After the show, they gathered around me, full of curiosity. Seeing their excitement made me incredibly happy. I hope our music can introduce more people to jazz and its potential for cultural exchange."
In 2023, Perne met Qi Xingfeng, a traditional Dongcang drum music master. They immediately connected through music. "Dongcang drum music belongs not just to China, but to the world. I'll work with the drum club to share its rhythms globally. Combining jazz drumming with traditional Chinese percussion can create something entirely new."

Beyond performing, Perne is also a music producer. He recently established his studio, Stan Record, in Xi'an High-Tech Industries Development Zone. "My studio is a blend of East and West. There are traditional Chinese paintings and calligraphy alongside modern recording equipment and Western instruments. I want to use my expertise to create unique productions reflecting my Xi'an experiences."
"Xi'an is evolving, and I'm honored to be part of its transformation. This city has inspired me, and I hope to continue contributing to its vibrant music scene."
