Xi'an, as a city, has existed for 3,100 years, but its civilization dates back to 5,000 years ago. The old Chang'an was the capital of 13 dynasties, spanning over 1,100 years. Leading the six ancient cities of China, Xi'an is reputed as one of four metropolises of ancient civilization.

Xi'an is home to more than one hundred enterprises and institutions specializing in aerospace and aviation, ordnance industry, and electronic information. The city has the second powerful arms industry and lays claim to a large proportion of China's aviation (1/3) and aerospace (1/4) research and production capacity. Both researchers and research achievements abound here. By 2021, income from civil-military industries is expected to exceed RMB 330 billion Yuan a year.

Xi'an's overall research capability ranks third in the country. There are over 460 research institutions, 209 provincial-and-above-level key laboratories and engineering research centers, 60 academicians, 218 State Council-subsidized experts, and 460,000 highly technical people. Xi'an is one of the gathering places for higher learning institutions and research institutes, with 63 universities and colleges, 1.2 million undergraduate and graduate students, and more than 300,000 graduates a year.
Unique Regional Location
The greater Xi'an is where the country's geodetic origin and time keeping and time service center are located. It's China's space-time center, and the center of land (roads and railways) and air traffic and transportation, regional communications hub, western China's largest logistics center, and the meeting place of people and information flow.
Superior Traffic Position
Xi'an is a key strategic hub connecting Europe and Asia, linking the east and west, and tying the north and south. It is one of the central points of China's three dimensional transportation networks, and one of six railway, highway and air traffic hubs. Provincial capital cities are reachable with 2-3 hours; circum-Bohai-Sea regions, the Yangtze River Delta and the Pearl River Delta, 5-6 hours.
